FTP/Network speeds can vary, based on a lot of different variables between the server and your home connection. This guide summarizes common issues and gives you pointers on how to analyse and solve them.
While this guide mainly looks at FTP you can also use it if your getting slow download speeds from HTTP or buffering on Plex etc it all comes under Network issues, Also please note in 99% of cases the tests show there is an outage on route to your location this is fully out of our control and as soon as the affected ISP fixes there route the speeds pick up again
Also to Note our servers are based in the EU, Speeds to the USA can be affected by USA ISP's putting traffic on low priority networks this is fully out of our control you can bypass this by getting a cheap VPN service and testing different servers until you find one that gives better peering to you.
Before proceeding with the steps, make sure you have:
- Tried another ftp client, like FlashFXP, Cuteftp or winscp and see if you get better speeds with them
- Made sure you have added the custom FTP port to your firewall and/or anti-virus
- If you have a VPN service you can turn this on and change servers on it to see if the speeds pick up in most cases changing the route fixes the issues
If this does not solve your problems then continue on.
Step 1: Analyze your connection from home to your slot
For us to troubleshoot your issue we need information about the route from your home connection to the server. You can help us by running a so called trace via an application called MTR. You can download MTR for Windows by visiting this site and downloading it. Once downloaded, just add your seedbox URL (for example: gsb1.seedit4.me) or your server IP to MTR and hit start. Once it has been running for 15 minutes you can gather and then send us the results by opening a ticket.
Step 2: Analyze your connection from your slot to your home
You first need to install MTR on your seedbox, this has to be done manually by following the steps below.
- If you haven't already, enable SSH on your slot
- Connect via SSH to your slot
- Type in the following command, followed by enter: sudo apt-get install mtr
- You will be presented with a password, use your seedbox password to confirm
- Once installed type in the following command, followed by enter: mtr your.home.ip.here
The test should start now, leave it running for 15 minutes. Once that time has passed take a screen shot of the results and send it to us. You can use an application like using "PrntScr" for this.
Once we have the requested information we will be able to advice you on the next steps that are needed to resolve your problem. Please be aware that we are not able to solve physically issues, like a network node that is slowing down traffic, or an ISP shaping it.
Optional Step 3: Circumvent a direct FTP connection to the server
There is one thing you can do to circumvent any peering issues: you can sync your slot with Google Drive and instead download your files from there.
First you will need to install Rclone on your seedbox, you can easily do so via your dashboard. Next follow our video guide below.
The only change you need to make to the video, is if your account does not show other on google set it to desktop both ways work. If you have a unlimited team drive click "Y" when it asks you to set it up.
Now you can send your data to Gdrive and just download from there, using the google servers.
